Can Veneers Be Whitened, Repaired or Removed?
This page is general information and does not replace an examination.
Veneers cannot be whitened: whitening gel lightens only natural teeth, so porcelain, E.max and zirconia veneers keep their colour, and a veneer that no longer matches is changed by replacing it. A small chip can often be repaired or a loose veneer re-bonded; larger damage needs a new veneer. Veneers can be removed, but a prepared tooth then needs a new veneer or crown. At Ulubey Dental Clinic in Antalya removing an old veneer is €35 per tooth, included when a new veneer or crown is placed.

Can veneers be whitened?
No. Teeth whitening can only lighten the colour of natural teeth[1]. The colour of a porcelain, E.max or zirconia veneer is set by the laboratory when it is made, and whitening gel does not change it. The same applies to crowns, dentures and implants[1].
Composite veneers are different in one respect: they are less stain- and wear-resistant than porcelain[2], so they can pick up surface staining over the years. In a laboratory study of bleaching agents on resin-based materials, a composite resin showed the largest colour change, while the change in resin matrix ceramics stayed below clinically acceptable limits[4], so whitening gel is not a reliable way to refresh composite either. Surface stains on composite are usually polished; when the colour itself has changed, the composite is renewed.
| Surface | Does whitening change its colour? | What to do if it looks too dark |
|---|---|---|
| Natural tooth[1] | Yes | Professional whitening at a dental clinic |
| Porcelain, E.max or zirconia veneer[1] | No | Replace the veneer in a new shade |
| Composite veneer[2][4] | Not reliably | Polish surface stains; renew the composite if the colour has changed |
| Crown, bridge, implant crown or denture[1] | No | Replace it in a new shade |
Your dentist checks which of your teeth are natural and which are restorations before planning whitening.
Whitening before veneers: getting the shade right
Because veneers will not follow any later change in colour, the order matters. If you want whiter natural teeth next to your veneers, tell us at the examination: the veneer shade is chosen to match the natural teeth that stay, and your dentist confirms the order of whitening and veneers at the examination. Whitening is not included in veneer prices.
| Option | What it involves | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Opalescence | One in-clinic session, no light, no home kit | €150 |
| Philips Zoom + NiteWhite home kit | One in-clinic lamp session (up to 4 × 15 minutes) plus a 6-day home kit with custom upper and lower trays | €350 |

At our clinic whitening is only for adults aged 18 and over, and the NHS advises against it during pregnancy or breastfeeding[1]; for at least 3 days afterwards we ask for a “white diet”. Details are on our teeth whitening page, and our tooth shade guide explains how a shade is chosen.
When veneers and natural teeth no longer match
Natural teeth can darken with age and with drinks such as coffee, tea or red wine[1], while a ceramic veneer keeps its colour. Years later, the neighbouring natural teeth may look darker than the veneers. There are two ways to bring them together again:
- Whiten the natural teeth towards the veneer shade, if they have darkened and whitening is suitable for you.
- Replace the veneer, if it is the veneer that no longer fits the smile, for example a single dark or opaque veneer next to natural teeth.
When we plan a new veneer, we measure the shade with a VITA Easyshade digital spectrophotometer and cross-polarized photography, and we also take into account the remaining natural teeth, the white of the eyes, skin tone and age.
Can a chipped or loose veneer be repaired?
Often, yes. A veneer may chip, crack, wear down or loosen over time, and the dentist then re-bonds, repairs or replaces it[2]. Small chips may be repaired[3]. Composite veneers are easier to fix than porcelain[2].
Repairs of glass ceramic with composite are well studied in the laboratory: a 2025 review of 123 laboratory studies found that the surface treatment used before the repair affects how well the composite holds, and for lithium disilicate (E.max-type) ceramic the results did not support anything beyond the standard etching, silane and adhesive steps[5]. Almost all of that evidence is from the laboratory, so a repair is a sensible first step for a small chip, not a guarantee that the veneer will last as long as a new one.
| Problem | What it usually means | Usual solution |
|---|---|---|
| Small chip at the edge | Local damage; the veneer is still bonded | Polishing or a composite repair[3] |
| Crack or larger fracture | The ceramic is weakened | A new veneer[2] |
| Veneer came off in one piece | The bond has failed | Re-bonding if the veneer and tooth allow it, otherwise a new veneer[2] |
| Dark line at the gum | Marginal staining[8] or a receding gum | Polishing, or a new veneer if the margin is exposed |
| Composite veneer looks dull or stained | Surface wear and staining | Polishing or renewal[2] |
A dentist decides after examining the veneer and the tooth; photos sent on WhatsApp help us tell you in advance whether you need to come in.
Keep it in a clean, dry container and contact a dentist. Do not try to glue it back yourself: a veneer has to be bonded by a dentist on a clean, isolated tooth surface. If the tooth is painful or a sharp edge cuts your lip or tongue, see a dentist the same day.
Fracture and debonding are exactly what our veneer guarantee covers: 5-year guarantee on E.max veneers against fracture or debonding (excluding trauma, and bruxism without the night guard we provide); zirconia veneers carry the same 5-year clinic guarantee, not the 10-year Amann Girrbach guarantee, which applies to zirconia crowns and bridges. All guarantees are conditional on attending recommended check-ups. Full terms are in our written dental guarantee.
Can veneers be removed?
Yes, a dentist can remove a veneer, but it is not a way back to the tooth you had. To place a porcelain veneer, a small amount of enamel is removed from the front and sides of the tooth, so the treatment is not reversible[2]. After removal, a prepared tooth normally needs a new veneer or a crown. Veneer preparations remove much less tooth than crown preparations, which is why a new veneer is usually still possible.
No-prep veneers are the exception: when no tooth was removed, the treatment is described as reversible[6]. Our guide Do veneers damage your teeth? explains prep and no-prep veneers in detail.
At our clinic, removing an old veneer costs €35 per tooth, and it is included when a new veneer or crown is placed on the same tooth. Removing an old crown before a new crown has no separate fee.
Replacing old veneers in Antalya
Old veneers or crowns are usually replaced because of a colour mismatch, chipping, a dark line at the gum, or a result that looks too bulky or too white. The plan follows the same steps as a first set of veneers:
- Examination and panoramic X-ray of the teeth under the old veneers or crowns; decay and gum problems are treated first.
- Digital smile design preview and mock-up, so you can see the new shape before anything is removed.
- Removal, preparation and temporaries, usually ready within 2–3 hours.
- Try-in and final fitting of the new veneers or crowns.
Zirconia veneers usually take about 5 working days and E.max veneers about 5–7; our 5-working-day crown and veneer trip shows the days. If the old work was cut down as crowns rather than veneers, see Turkey teeth gone wrong.
| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| Removal of an old veneer | €35, included when a new veneer or crown is placed on the same tooth |
| E.max laminate veneer | €250 |
| Zirconia veneer | €185 |
| Composite veneer | €120 |
| Zirconia crown | €185 |
| E.max crown | €250 |

Included: the temporaries and try-ins during your visit, the digital smile design preview and mock-up in cosmetic plans, and a custom night guard with veneers. Prices are indicative; your final written quote follows the examination and X-rays and is valid for 30 days. Unless the treatment plan changes, the written price does not change. The veneers cost calculator gives a first estimate.
Keeping veneers looking right
- If you grind or clench, wear the night guard. In a 20-year study, grinding was linked to a 7.7 times greater risk of veneer failure[8]. A custom night guard is included with veneers at our clinic. See protecting crowns and veneers when you grind.
- Mind staining drinks with composite. Coffee, tea and red wine can stain or discolour veneers, composite more than porcelain[2].
- Keep your check-ups. The yearly check-up is at our clinic in Antalya (no fee for the check-up) or with any licensed dentist where you live, who sends us an X-ray, 5 photos and a short note; Dr. Ali Cem Ulubey or Dr. Surur Ulubey reviews them in writing within 7 days.
- Know what to expect. Lithium disilicate veneers reached 96.81% survival at about 10 years in a 2025 meta-analysis; zirconia veneers had 100% survival at 2.6 years, but long-term data do not exist yet[7].
Removable clip-on veneers are a different product that you take out yourself; our page on clip-on veneers explains their risks. For an overview of veneer types and prices, see veneers in Antalya.
Frequently asked questions
Can porcelain veneers be whitened?
No. Whitening gel lightens only natural teeth, so porcelain, E.max and zirconia veneers keep the colour they were made in. If a veneer looks too dark next to your natural teeth, the options are to whiten the natural teeth towards the veneer shade or to replace the veneer in a new shade. If you want whiter teeth, tell us before your veneers are made.
Should I whiten my teeth before getting veneers?
If you want whiter natural teeth next to your veneers, yes, plan it first, because the veneer shade is matched to the natural teeth that stay and will not follow a later change. Your dentist confirms the order of whitening and veneers at the examination. At our clinic whitening is €150 with Opalescence or €350 with Philips Zoom and a home kit, for adults 18 and over.
Can a chipped veneer be fixed?
Often. A small chip can usually be polished or repaired with composite, and a veneer that comes off in one piece can sometimes be re-bonded. A crack or a larger fracture usually means a new veneer. Send us a photo on WhatsApp first; E.max and zirconia veneers carry a 5-year guarantee against fracture or debonding, conditional on check-ups and excluding trauma and grinding without the night guard.
Can veneers be removed and replaced?
Yes. A dentist removes the old veneer, and a prepared tooth then needs a new veneer or a crown, because the enamel removed for the first veneer does not grow back. At Ulubey Dental Clinic removing an old veneer is €35 per tooth and is included when a new veneer or crown is placed on the same tooth. New E.max veneers are €250 and zirconia veneers €185 per tooth.
Are veneers reversible?
Porcelain veneers placed after preparing the tooth are not reversible: enamel is removed and does not grow back, so the tooth will always need a covering. No-prep veneers, where no tooth is removed, are the exception and are described as reversible. Composite bonding is also more conservative. A mock-up lets you test a new shape on your own teeth before anything is changed.
What should I do if a veneer falls off?
Keep it in a clean, dry container and contact a dentist; do not glue it back yourself, because it needs to be bonded on a clean, isolated tooth surface. Bring the veneer to the appointment: if it is intact and fits, it can sometimes be re-bonded. If the tooth hurts or a sharp edge cuts your lip or tongue, see a dentist the same day.
