1. Who plans, prepares and fits your crown, by name
Why it matters: How much of the tooth is reduced, how the crown edge seals and how the bite is adjusted are decided by the dentist at the chair. If the dentist changes between planning and fitting, nobody is responsible for the whole process.
How to check it: Ask in writing: “Who assesses my X-ray, who prepares my tooth and who fits the crown?” Check that these names appear on the clinic’s website and that the dentist can give a dental chamber registration number. The UK General Dental Council advises patients going abroad to find out whether the country has a dental regulator and whether registration is compulsory, and to be assessed by a qualified dentist before receiving a treatment plan and cost estimate.[4] In Türkiye, dentists in private practice must join their provincial dental chamber.[5]

2. Is a crown really needed?
Why it matters: A crown covers the whole tooth and needs more preparation than a filling, an inlay or onlay, or a veneer. That is appropriate for damaged, cracked or root-canal-treated teeth; for a healthy tooth that only needs a cosmetic improvement, it is overtreatment.
How to check it: Ask for every tooth: “Why a crown and not a filling, an inlay or onlay, or a veneer?” The answer should refer to your X-ray and the condition of that tooth, not to a package offer.
We decide tooth by tooth, after the examination. A root-canal-treated tooth has usually lost a lot of structure and, especially at the back of the mouth, normally needs the protection of a crown or of an onlay that covers the cusps. A 2024 systematic review of 11 studies found that, for root-filled back teeth, cusp-covering onlays performed favourably compared with full crowns in the short to mid term.[3] When less structure needs replacing, a ceramic inlay or onlay (€250) can be enough. If your teeth are healthy and you want a cosmetic refinement, we recommend minimal-preparation veneers instead of crowns. Why over-prepared crowns go wrong is explained in a separate article.
3. The zirconia manufacturer, by name
Why it matters: “Premium zirconia” is a sales phrase, not a material. Zirconia is made by many manufacturers in different formulations. Without a manufacturer’s name you cannot compare quotes, or later trace what is in your mouth.
How to check it: Your written quote should name the material and the manufacturer for each tooth. Make sure the material does not change between the quote and the chair without a written reason.
We use zirconia from Amann Girrbach[8] (Austrian, made in the EU, CE-marked). For E.max crowns we use Ivoclar IPS e.max.[9] Other ceramic materials are possible on request and are quoted individually.
4. The laboratory, and a lab certificate
Why it matters: A zirconia crown is milled and finished in a dental laboratory. The clearest proof that the material really comes from the named manufacturer is a certificate from the laboratory.
How to check it: Ask: “Which laboratory makes my crown, and will I receive a lab certificate that names the material and the lab?”

5. Digital scan and a same-day temporary
Why it matters: A crown whose edge does not seal exactly lets plaque and bacteria collect there and raises the risk of decay and gum inflammation under the crown. A prepared tooth should also not stay unprotected for days.
How to check it: Ask how the impression is taken (digital scan or silicone impression) and when you receive a temporary after the preparation.

6. Monolithic or layered, and what matters on front teeth
Why it matters: On a layered (veneered) crown, a second layer of porcelain sits on a core, and chipping usually starts at that bond. On visible front teeth, how naturally the crown lets light through also matters.
How to check it: Ask whether the crown is monolithic (milled from a single block) or layered, and which material is planned for visible front teeth.
Every zirconia crown we make is monolithic, milled from a single block, so there is no bonded porcelain layer where chipping usually starts. The evidence supports this: in a 2015 review, zirconia crowns were lost more often than metal-ceramic crowns because their veneering ceramic fractured,[2] and a 2026 review of 64 studies found that monolithic zirconia and monolithic lithium disilicate crowns had significantly fewer ceramic fractures and chipping than veneered ones.[1] For visible front teeth we usually recommend E.max for its translucency; on back molars, the strength of zirconia matters more. 7. The tooth under the crown: root canal, post, core
Why it matters: A crown is only as stable as the tooth beneath it, and the crown guarantee does not cover the root canal or filling underneath. What the tooth itself needs should be clear before you travel.
How to check it: Send a recent X-ray and ask whether a root canal, a post or a core build-up might be needed, and whether these items are in the quote.
If your tooth needs a root canal before the crown, or a core build-up because it is badly broken down, we assess this at the first appointment and tell you the cost before treatment starts. Root canal treatment costs €120 (one root), €150 (two roots) or €180 (three roots); a post and a core build-up, if needed, appear as separate lines in the written quote. The guarantee covers the crown itself, not the root canal or filling beneath it.
8. The guarantee in writing, with conditions
Why it matters: What matters is not the number of years but what is covered, under which conditions and what is excluded. A blanket “lifetime guarantee” with no conditions and no document does not help you when something goes wrong.
How to check it: Get the terms in writing before treatment: for which material, for how long, under which conditions (check-ups, night guard), with which exclusions, and where a remake is done.

9. The yearly check-up, even at your home dentist
Why it matters: Almost every guarantee depends on check-ups. If they are only possible at the clinic abroad, the guarantee is easily lost in practice.
How to check it: Ask how often a check-up is needed, whether your dentist at home can do it, which documents you must send, and what happens if you miss one.
Once a year (within ±2 months of the treatment anniversary) you attend a check-up: with us in Antalya (no fee) or with any licensed dentist, in your home country or anywhere else. For a home check-up you send us a panoramic X-ray, 5 standard intra-oral photos and your dentist’s note; Dr. Ali Cem Ulubey or Dr. Surur Ulubey reviews the documents within 7 days and confirms the check-up in writing. A missed check-up pauses the guarantee but does not cancel it: a catch-up check-up within 3 months restores it, unless a problem caused by the gap has developed.
10. Your stay and flight home: an honest timeline
Why it matters: The laboratory needs time between preparation, try-in and final fitting. A schedule that is too tight leaves no room to correct the fit, the bite or the shade.
How to check it: Ask how many days you need to stay, what happens on each day and whether Sundays are counted. Book your flight home only when the plan is in writing.
A single crown is usually finished within 1–2 days. For larger cases, preparation is on day 1, the try-in one day later and the final fitting two days after that (4–5 treatment days); with the examination and a check, plan 5–7 days.
