Dental Treatment Abroad and Insurance: What to Check First

Quick answer

Ulubey Dental Clinic in Antalya is a private clinic: we do not process insurance claims, and whether your insurer or tax office pays back any cost depends on your policy and your country, not on us. On request we give you the documents an insurer may ask for: a standard Turkish invoice, an itemised treatment report signed by the dentist, the treatment plan, and X-rays and records. UK travellers should know that the GHIC and EHIC are not valid in Türkiye[1] and that standard travel insurance does not normally cover elective treatment abroad[2]. Ask your insurer in writing before you book.

Our insurance policy in one paragraph

We are a private clinic and do not process insurance claims. On request we provide the documents your insurer or tax office may ask for: a standard Turkish invoice, an itemised treatment report written and signed by the dentist, the treatment plan, and X-rays and records. Whether any cost is reimbursed or tax-deductible depends on your insurer, your policy and the rules of your country; we cannot guarantee it and take no responsibility for those decisions. Please check with your insurer in writing before you travel.

We say this plainly because insurance is where patients most often hear promises that nobody can keep. No clinic can know your policy wording, your country’s rules or your insurer’s decision. What we can do is give you clear, complete documents and an honest written plan, so your insurer has what it needs to decide. We do not state percentages, and we do not tell anyone that their policy will pay.

The documents we provide

Insurers and tax offices usually decide on paper, so the documents matter. These are the ones we provide:

Documents Ulubey Dental Clinic provides for insurers and tax offices
DocumentWhat it showsWhen you get it
Written treatment plan and quoteThe planned treatment, materials and price; valid for 30 daysBefore treatment, after the examination and X-rays

We issue a standard Turkish invoice only. If your insurer needs a translation, ask it which kind it accepts.

Our treatment record handover checklist lists every record worth taking home, for your insurer and for your own dentist.

Questions to ask your insurer before you travel

Ask these in writing and keep the answers. A phone call is easy to misremember; an e-mail is not.

  • Cover abroad: does my policy cover dental treatment outside my home country, and in Türkiye in particular?
  • Planned or emergency: does it cover planned treatment, or only emergencies while travelling?
  • Approval first: do I need approval before treatment, and what must the treatment plan contain?
  • Documents: which documents do you need, and do they need to be translated?
  • Limits: is there a yearly maximum, a waiting period or an excess for dental treatment?
  • Afterwards: does the policy cover follow-up care or complications at home after treatment abroad?
Send us your insurer’s list

If your insurer gives you a list of required documents, send it to us before your trip. We will tell you honestly which items we can provide and which we cannot, so there are no surprises after you return.

What official sources say by country

Rules differ by country and change over time. The table below lists what official sources say; it is not advice about your own policy.

Insurance and tax: what official sources say about treatment in Türkiye
Country / schemeWhat the official source saysWhat to do
UK: GHIC and EHICThe European Health Insurance Card and Global Health Insurance Card are not valid in Türkiye[1]Do not rely on them for any treatment in Türkiye
UK: travel insuranceStandard travel insurance does not normally cover you if you travelled abroad for elective surgery, and may not cover complications[2]Check your policy wording and ask your insurer in writing
Germany: statutory insurance (GKV)§ 13(4) SGB V lets insured people use providers in another EU member state, an EEA state or Switzerland and claim reimbursement[3]Türkiye is not in that list; ask your Krankenkasse in writing before treatment
USA: federal taxIRS Publication 502 lets you include amounts paid to prevent and alleviate dental disease as medical expenses; teeth whitening is not included, and cosmetic procedures generally are not[4]Ask a tax adviser how this applies to you

The UK Foreign Office also advises discussing treatment plans with your UK doctor or dentist before going ahead, and doing your own research, because private companies have a financial interest in booking treatment[1]. Our before dental treatment abroad checklist covers the medical questions and what to send before you book.

If something goes wrong after you return

GOV.UK advises checking whether your insurance covers you and being aware that it may not be valid for some costs, for example complications after treatment[2]. That is why our own written guarantee terms matter. 10-year fracture guarantee on Amann Girrbach zirconia crowns and bridges made at our partner lab; 5-year clinic guarantee on crowns and bridges in other materials; crown and bridge guarantees exclude fracture due to bruxism (teeth grinding), and patients who grind their teeth must wear the night guard we provide. All guarantees are conditional on attending recommended check-ups and cover the prosthesis, not the root canal or filling beneath it. 5-year guarantee on E.max veneers against fracture/debonding (excl. trauma, bruxism without night guard); manufacturer lifetime guarantee on the implant fixture. A fixture guarantee does not mean every implant integrates: smoking, uncontrolled diabetes and gum health affect healing. Check-ups can be done at our clinic in Antalya or by any licensed dentist where you live. A covered remake is done at our clinic at no treatment cost; travel and hotel are paid by the patient.

If you need emergency treatment abroad for pain or infection, that does not void the guarantee: send us the report, X-rays and photos within 7 days. The full terms are in our written dental guarantee.

How you pay at the clinic

  • No deposit is required for treatment; you book with your flight details and pay at the clinic for the treatment done.
  • Methods: cash, card or bank transfer.
  • Currencies: euro, and also British pounds, US dollars and Turkish lira at the live exchange rate.
  • No credit or instalment plans, and invoices show the treatment actually done.
  • Price: your written quote is valid for 30 days; unless the treatment plan changes, the written price does not change.

All fees are listed on our dental treatment prices page. More practical information is on our international patients page.

Frequently asked questions

Will my insurance pay for dental treatment in Turkey?

We cannot say, and nobody honest can without your policy. Whether any cost is reimbursed depends on your insurer, your policy and the rules of your country. We are a private clinic and do not process claims. On request we provide a standard Turkish invoice, an itemised treatment report signed by the dentist, the treatment plan, and X-rays and records. Ask your insurer in writing before you travel.

Does the GHIC or EHIC cover treatment in Turkey?

No. The UK Foreign Office states that the European Health Insurance Card and the Global Health Insurance Card are not valid in Türkiye. They do not cover planned or emergency treatment there. For emergencies while travelling, UK guidance is to have appropriate travel insurance; for planned dental treatment, check your policy in writing.

Does travel insurance cover dental work abroad?

UK government guidance says standard travel insurance does not normally cover you if you travelled abroad for elective surgery, and that insurance may not be valid for some costs, such as complications. Read your policy wording and ask the insurer in writing before you book.

Can you send documents directly to my insurer?

We do not process insurance claims or deal with insurers on your behalf. We give the documents to you: a standard Turkish invoice, an itemised treatment report written and signed by the dentist on request, the treatment plan, and your X-rays and records. You then submit them to your insurer in the way it asks.

Is dental treatment abroad tax-deductible?

It depends on your country’s tax rules. In the United States, for example, IRS Publication 502 allows amounts paid to prevent and alleviate dental disease to count as medical expenses, while teeth whitening does not count. We cannot advise on your tax position; ask a tax adviser. On request we provide the invoice and an itemised treatment report.

Do I need to pay a deposit before treatment?

No deposit is required for treatment. You book with your flight details and pay at the clinic for the treatment done, by cash, card or bank transfer, in euro, pounds, dollars or lira at the live exchange rate. Your written quote is valid for 30 days, and unless the treatment plan changes the written price does not change.

Need documents for your insurer?
Send us your insurer’s list of required documents before you book: we tell you honestly what we can provide. Messages are usually answered within 4 hours; a written quote usually within 24 hours after photos or X-rays arrive.
